Washington has finally responded to the reports of a US-flagged boat that reportedly entered Cuban waters and opened fire on border guards. The authorities said the US government wasn’t involved in the operation. The New York Times says that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had something to say about the incident.
Rubio, who’s on a diplomatic visit to the island nation of Saint Kitts and Nevis to meet with representatives of Caribbean countries, said the US is investigating reports of shooting on Cuban territory.
He says Washington is counting on Cuba to fill them in on what happened.
“As we get more info, we’ll be ready to respond appropriately,” he said.
When asked if the incident could be linked to US government representatives or if it was carried out on their behalf, Rubio replied, “No.”
US Vice President Jay D. Vance also had something to say about the situation.
“We’re keeping an eye on this. We’re hoping it won’t turn out to be as bad as we’re afraid it will be. But I can’t say more,” he said.
