Before you leave, make sure you know the unexpected airline rules for the winter holidays.

With the winter holidays coming up, airlines are reminding travelers about the strict and often unexpected rules for transporting holiday items. Express says popular Christmas items like sparklers, fireworks, and traditional firecrackers are considered flammable and explosive, which is why there are strict restrictions on them. For example, firecrackers are a no-no on all flights to the U.S. (in carry-on and checked luggage). The rules can differ quite a bit from one carrier to another. Ryanair, Emirates, KLM, Lufthansa, and American Airlines have all banned them from being brought on board. British Airways lets you check in up to two boxes of firecrackers, but you can’t do that on flights to the U.S. Virgin Atlantic lets you bring one box per person, and Qantas and Air New Zealand require them to be carried in the cargo hold. One of the few exceptions is the low-cost carrier easyJet, which allows firecrackers to be transported in both carry-on and checked luggage. Passengers should check the rules first and buy fireworks at their destination.

A lot of people head out on trips during the winter holidays, either to see family or to explore new places. There are some unexpected rules for the holiday season that most popular airlines have, and most travelers are unaware of them. The British publication Express says there are certain things you’re not allowed to bring on a plane.

For instance, passengers flying to the U.S. aren’t allowed to bring Christmas crackers. Like sparklers or fireworks, they’re not allowed in carry-on luggage or checked baggage. The reason is that all these Christmas items are highly flammable.

The popular British airline British Airways lets passengers bring up to two boxes of sealed, factory-made party poppers in their checked luggage. But you can’t do that on flights to the U.S. Virgin Atlantic, for example, allows one box per person.

easyJet is one of the few airlines that lets you bring firecrackers on both your carry-on and checked luggage. Carriers like Qantas, South African Airways, and Air New Zealand only allow sealed boxes in the cargo hold.

Some of the big names in the airline industry, like Emirates, Ryanair, KLM, Lufthansa, and American Airlines, have started banning Christmas crackers as part of their list of forbidden items. For example, Ryanair says on its website that you can’t bring Christmas crackers in your carry-on luggage on the plane. Passengers should purchase them after they arrive.
