Apple might stop using MagSafe on future entry-level iPhones to sell more of its magnetic cases. People who know what’s going on say that the company wants to make the built-in magnets a premium feature of the Pro range or force users to buy additional accessories. The budget iPhone 16e has already been released without this technology, but analysts are warning of potential reputational risks because of weak iPhone Air sales and delays in the development of Apple Intelligence.
Apparently, insiders are saying that Apple might drop MagSafe technology in future iPhone models. This feature – a magnetic system for charging and accessories – has been a key part of the brand’s smartphone ecosystem for five years.
It’s not because of technical limits, but because of business reasons. As the report says, the market for MagSafe accessories has been really successful, and Apple thinks that without built-in magnets, people will have to buy magnet-compatible cases – even those who like to carry their phone without a case.
But the source says this might mean getting rid of MagSafe from the basic iPhone models. The Pro and Pro Max models might have built-in magnets, or they could be a premium feature that users would have to pay extra for.
There’s already an example of this: back in 2025, Apple released the iPhone 16e without MagSafe, saying that most people who buy cheaper models charge their phones with a cable. But they brought magnets back in the iPhone 17e, because feedback showed that this wasn’t the best idea.
Analysts reckon that ditching MagSafe could do a lot of damage to the company’s reputation, especially with all the delays to Apple Intelligence and the poor sales of the iPhone Air. But history shows that even Apple’s controversial decisions are eventually accepted by the market – as was the case with the removal of the charger from the box.
